Audi 5000CS Talladega

Audi 5000CS Talladega

Despite Audi's rally-success, the US was more or less inaffected of this, as rally has never been
highly popular. To make a mence and market Audi, in 1986 a Audi 200 was rebranded 5000CS and
built to NASCAR standards to achieve a record for topspeed at the US' fastest speedway-circut, the
Talladega.

The car itself did not look any different from a standard 200 except for minor details as a spoilerlip,
a small rearspoiler and sidesills for improving downforce. Additionaly, both sideviewmirrors were
deleted to decrease drag coefficient.

A fully adjustable suspension, lowered at 40/40 improved the handling of the car. This, and the reducing
excessive weight by aluminium bonnet, kevlar-doors and fenders, along with plastic windows (except
for the windshield) gave the Talladega a weight at 1072kg, and a much lower point-of-gravity.

The record was done with average-speedof 332,88km/h and a topspeed at 350km/h at 7200rpms.
The Talladega engine does 7700rpms...

This engine is a very special one. It features valve-angles at 47°, and is Audi's first engine with
5 valve technology. Besides this it is very similar to other 20V engines, but had titanium rods and
pistons with special coolingducts. Two injectors per cylinder and 2BAR boost resulted in 650hp. It
needed drysump because of the huge forces during the record attempt.
